Pumpkin Shortage 2009

Stores May Run Out of Pumpkins for Halloween and Thanksgiving

Oct 12, 2009 Tammie Burak

There may not be enough pumpkins to go around this fall, but here are tips for finding pumpkins and using substitutes in place of pumpkins.

Pumpkin growers are reporting smaller and fewer pumpkins this year in many areas across the United States and Canada. A cool spring and wet weather during the growing season have affected many pumpkin crops.

Bad Weather Behind Poor Pumpkin Crops

In the north eastern states cool, wet weather has resulted in large losses due to fungus and rot. Small sizes and late ripening pumpkins are problems in other areas. At a time when pumpkins should be ripening to that beautiful, deep orange hue that’s so familiar this time of year, many pumpkins still have a way to go. Some farmers are concerned that many pumpkins just won’t ripen in time for Halloween. Others are experiencing up to a 70% reduction in yields and simply won’t be getting as many pumpkins to market as they normally do.

Poor Pumpkin Yields Across the Country

In western Canada, pumpkins are smaller and not as plentiful as they usually are. Growers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta have been disappointed with yields this year. There is one exception though. British Columbia has had a bumper crop of pumpkins this year because of ideal growing conditions there.

Pumpkin Shortage Expected for Halloween

While consumers may be happy to settle for smaller pumpkins, late comers may come up empty handed. Producers are expecting a shortage as Halloween draws near and are advising consumers to get their pumpkins early.

Shortage of Canned Pumpkin Could Spoil Plans for Homemade Pumpkin Pie at Thanksgiving Shoppers hoping to find after-Halloween fresh pumpkins for their holiday baking may not find the surplus pumpkins they’re used to getting at bargain prices for their homemade pumpkin pies and muffins. To make matters worse, because last year was also a poor year for pumpkins, there may also be a shortage of canned pumpkin on super market shelves at the time when many home cooks will be preparing for Thanksgiving supper. Those who look forward to homemade pumpkin pie as part of their annual Thanksgiving celebrations may have to consider using a substitute this year.

Choosing a Substitute for Fresh Pumpkin in Recipes

Because pumpkins are in the squash family, it isn’t difficult to substitute squash for pumpkins in recipes calling for fresh pumpkin. Acorn, hubbard, or butternut squashes make good substitutes for fresh pumpkin in recipes, including pumpkin pie. These squashes have a similar deep orange colour and similar density of flesh as pumpkin and can be prepared in the same way as fresh pumpkin.

Finding a Pumpkin While Supplies Last

Where to buy pumpkins? While supplies last, pumpkins are available at grocery stores. As supplies from large producers become limited, smaller producers may still have pumpkins available. Check local market gardens and farmer’s markets. Neighboring gardeners may also be a good source. Ask around. Pumpkins are fun to grow, but a little goes a long way. A few plants can easily produce more pumpkins than a hobby gardener can use.

Though poor growing conditions have resulted in lower availability of pumpkins for Halloween and Thanksgiving, substitutes may be available. Gourds and squashes make suitable substitutions for seasonal decorating and cooking.
